DRIVER THEORY TEST

First and foremost you must apply to the Driver Theory Test Centre to sit your Driver Theory Test.
This is a test whereby you will be asked 40 questions on the rules of the road and need to score 35 or more to pass.

This test is done on a touch screen computer.

The Theory Test exam covers areas such as:

  • The rules of the road
  • Risk perception
  • Eco-driving
  • Hazard awareness
  • Good driving behaviour.

You can get a list of all the questions and answers in the Official Driving Theory Test book or CD-Rom available in any good bookstore or on the internet.

Note: Please have a credit / laser card and your PPS number available.

For C (Bus) and D (Truck) tests, please also have your driving license number available.

Important:

All your documentation will be checked on arrival at the test centre. Make sure you have photo identification with you, such as a passport, student identity card, public service card or Garda identity card.

LEARNERS PERMIT

When you have passed your theory test you can now apply for your Learner’s Permit. You will need this learners permit to legally drive on the road.

Now that you have received your learner’s permit you are now ready to start taking driving lessons.

Driving Test Application

When applying for your Driving Test there are a few things you need to know:

  • You must have held your first Learner Permit for six months or more on the day of your test.
  • If the learners permit is under six months, your examiner will not conduct the test, you will also lose your test fee and will have to re-apply for your test.
  • You must be insured to drive the vehicle in which you are driving the day of your test.
  • If you do not own a car, you can hire one of our teaching cars.

Once you have completed your driving lessons and you feel your driving is now at a competent standard, then it’s time to apply for your driving test.

The waiting time for the driving test fluctuates and is approximately 16 to 20 weeks at the Waterford test centre.

You will normally receive notification of your test 4 weeks before its due.

When you get your test date, be sure to book your pre-test course early, to ensure availability.
